What does the treatment involve?

Treatment is just as easy as the test.

If you test positive for Chlamydia or Gonorrhoea- don't panic! The infection can be treated with a short course of antiobiotics. Your sexual health clinic will give you advice about the different types- and which one is best for you.

There may be some side effects from the treatment you are given. All antibiotics will include information on those side effects.

If you are being treated for Gonorrhea, your Genito-Urinary Medicine (GUM) clinic will give you an appointment for around 72 hours after your initial treatment to check that the antibiotics have been effective. You should avoid having sex until it is confirmed that the antibiotics have worked.

How long before I can safely have sex after treatment?

You can have sex one week after your treatment ends. If you have a partner that has been treated then you must also wait till a week after his/her treatment has ended otherwise you run the risk of re-infection.
